  • Necton featured in Pride in Breckland Awards 2015

The finalists have been picked from an impressive 89 nominations and our very own treasure, Mr Peter Treasure has been selected as one of only three finalists in the Volunteer of the Year category.

Mr Treasure has lived in Necton for many years and following his retirement from full-time work, he responded to an advert from the Village Hall committee seeking somebody to help with computers. It turned out that they were actually looking for somebody who could source and then apply for funds to make some improvements and additions to the current hall facilities.
His first achievement was the co-ordination and successful applications to the National Lottery to provide for new play equipment in the village.
His second great fundraising achievement was for the installation of an outdoor gym – one of the first in Breckland.
Then along came plans for refurbishment and modernisation of the Village Hall building – new roof, front extension, new toilets, new main hall floor, new outside toilet for users of the play areas. The very latest addition to this list is the new air source heating for the building.
In total it is estimated that Mr Treasure has secured over £120,000 for the village in terms of funding grants, during the last 5 or so years.

In just the last few weeks, he has successfully secured a grant from the Watling Foundation to enable the Sports & Social Club to purchase and install a community defibrillator.
All this volunteer fundraising activity is done by Mr Treasure as an interested member of the public. He is not a committee member of the village hall, sports  & social club or a member of the Parish Council.

He is also one of Necton Homewatch points of contact and one of our most active members, with a regular item in our parish magazine.

So 3 cheers for Mr Treasure, our treasure.

  • Things Necton Parish Councillors get up to

Necton Parish Council Vice-chair, Jeanette Webb, doesn’t shy away from any task.  As the Council link with the Allotment Association, she’s often found getting close to the soil.

The editor spotted Jeanette recently on her knees, peering down a hole.  “Water!”, she said.  “The Parish Council have installed mains water supply to the Allotments and I’m reading the meter.”

  • Our red phonebox is as good as new again

  • Highway Rangers coming to town next week

  • Cllr Woodward turns ‘bin fixer’ on the A47

The Chair of Necton Parish Council, Frank Woodward, made a repair to one of the Parish Council bins this morning, extending its life for a little while longer.  The bin, located on the A47 beside the bus-stop to Norwich, was reported as damaged to the Council earlier in the week.  Mr Woodward, a retired Domestic Appliance Engineer, assessed the damage and utilising some spare materials, made good a repair this morning.

  • Your opportunity to write the next chapter in village life

The NRCC Committee have worked tirelessly for many years, updating the community centre, adding new facilities to the children’s play area and the adult’s outdoor gym and making sure that local groups can utilise a clean, warm and well-equipped hall for their many activities.

It’s time for new people to take hold of the baton and build on the great work already done.  If you like working with people, happy to help with some routine jobs, have some trustee experience, or simply want to get involved in your community – now is your opportunity.

Come along to the NRCC meeting on Monday, 23 February 2015 at the hall, starting at 7.30pm.
