  • Necton celebrates Volunteer Stars at its Community Spirit Awards 2018

    Necton Parish Council hosted their Community Spirit Awards 2018 at the Annual Parish Meeting on 25 April 2018. Cllr Nigel Wilkin, District Councillor for Necton, presented the awards.

    Five local people were nominated by residents for their special and unique contributions in helping other residents, local groups and generally making Necton a good place to live.

    Bernard Bell for his tireless work and fundraising efforts for the old village hall committee,
    Derek & Kim Woodbine for their many years’ energetic commitment to Necton Sports & Social Club,
    Jill Luongo for her life-long volunteer involvement in all things Necton,
    Jenny & Tony Smedley for their massive efforts for NSAG (Necton Substation Action Group),
    Georgie Bell for her many years of dedication to the Merle Boddy Centre in Swaffham.

    All of these people have given their time, energy and enthusiasm for the benefit and enjoyment of others and the Parish Council is delighted to recognise their contribution to life in Necton.

    Based upon the number of nominations, two of these people stood out as this year’s Community Stars – Bernard Bell and Jenny & Tony Smedley. In recognition, they each receive a small gift of vouchers for a meal at The Windmill, Necton.

  • Breckland Lottery – Support Necton Little Oaks

    A community lottery that will help Breckland-based groups raise much-needed funds will have its first draw this weekend, on Saturday 31 March.

    Since the lauch of Breckland Lottery on 1 March, more than 700 tickets have been sold, which directly benefit local ‘good causes’, and Necton’s Little Oaks are part of this exciting initiative.

    As part of the purchasing process, players can choose one of the good causes registered with the scheme to receive 50p of every £1 ticket they buy.

    In addition, a further 10p of every £1 ticket goes into a general community funding pot, which Breckland will release as grants.

    For every £1 ticket sold:

    50p will go to local good causes that are signed up to Our Breckland Lottery
    10p will go to a general fund, which Breckland Council will distribute locally as grants
    20p will go to the lottery prize fund
    20p will go towards running costs and VAT
    Players have until 23:59 on Friday 30 March to buy tickets and be in with a chance of winning up to £25,000.

    In addition, players who take part in the draw this weekend can also win the special lottery launch bolt-on prize of a year-long Parkwood Community Leisure membership, worth £389. This can be used at both Breckland Leisure Centre and Waterworld in Thetford and Dereham Leisure Centre, and includes access to gym, classes and swimming.

    Breckland Lottery was created by Breckland Council to provide a free and simple online platform for charities and not-for-profit organisations to raise awareness of their work and sell tickets that directly benefit their cause. By promoting the online lottery to their supporters and members, and engaging their local community, organisations can increase the amount of money they will receive through ticket sales.

  • Job Advert – Caretaker for Community Centre

    Are you looking for a part-time job with flexible hours that connects you with other people here in Necton?

    We are recruiting a caretaker to join our small team at the Community Centre. Principle responsibilities will be to ensure routine maintenance, safety and security regimes are maintained, providing assistance as required with moving furniture for bookings and opening and closing the centre for hirers.

    We are looking for someone who has a flexible approach to work and is happy to undertake some light maintenance jobs.

    Hours: 7 hours a week, ideally worked flexibly to meet the needs of the centre’s booking schedule.

    Salary: £8.75 per hour

  • Vattenfall Sub-station update

    Mrs Sue Fatch-Lovesey, Local Community Liaison Officer, Vattenfall, addressed this Council on 05 March and delivered a presentation updating Members and public of the recent amendments to Vattenfall’s proposed development. The presentation is available to view here.

    Following the presentation, individual councillors were invited to ask questions.  Here is a summary of these questions:

    • A number of affected landowners have provided written statements confirming they have not been consulted with regard to possible access and use of their land. Why have they not been consulted in this process?
    • Vattenfall were offered two alternative sites, both of which were identified as viable sites by an independent consultant. There appears to have been no adequate investigation by Vattenfall of their potential. Why not?
    • The proposed site is on private land, so very difficult to see the potential impact. The chosen site is on the highest ground. Photomontages made available by Vattenfall were mis-leading and too small to provide adequate representation of the identified site. It was stated that the consultation has been ‘a shambles and should be started again and run professionally.
    • It was considered that the most recent newsletter does not provide adequate information relating to the sub-station at Necton.
    • Will the proposed right hand filter lane at Spicer’s Corner be a permanent feature or just for the period of construction?
    • The existing Dudgeon site entrance (where National Grid is located) had a traffic management plan which did not operate as designed. (Traffic arriving from the east did not adhere to the route and simply used a layby to turn, causing congestion.) Will this site, which will be used for the National Grid extension works, have the same traffic management plan?
    • This proposed site may be a magnet for terrorism and it is designed to be un-manned. What provision will Vattenfall establish to protect from terrorism?
    • Arable crops, which will be up against the site’s fence lines are a significant fire risk. Has this risk been assessed?
    • Is this revised proposal for Necton larger than originally suggested during consultation in the summer of 2017?

    Twelve members of the public were present at this meeting and a some of these people asked the following questions:

    • A resident expressed concern about the potential noise levels from the proposed development and it did not seem that the research on noise to-date is sufficient.
    • Concern also expressed about the lack of consideration in the proposal of the longer-term impact in terms of health, flooding, etc.
    • A resident asked if some of this infrastructure could be located underground.
    • A resident asked that the landscape views take a wider aspect.
    • Another resident expressed concern about potential light pollution.
    • A resident asked what advantage is HVDC to Necton, given the main noise emitter; the transformers will be located outside.

    Some of these questions received initial responses at the meeting and there was a commitment to respond in full to Council following the meeting.  Further updates will be published.

  • Training & Awareness Session on CPR & Community Defibrillator

    Necton Parish Council in partnership with Community First Responders have arranged a training & awareness session on CPR and Defibrillator.  This training is open to local residents and particularly anybody involved in local community groups or carers for family members.
